Dear Parranderos everywhere: we are proud to announce that we have opened the doors to the Parranda network, a new project dedicated to the economic, civic, and cultural development of a “Greater Puerto Rico.” Already we have more than 1,200 people on the pre-registration list, and we expect many more to walk through the doors today. But in the middle of all the excitement and commotion, we thought we’d liven things up just a little bit more by announcing an event we are planning this Spring: The Parranda Summit 2013 – to be held in San Juan in May – will be the first in a series of events designed to enable boricuas from all over the world to meet live, become friends and begin working with one another on the causes that matter most to them.
There will be lots of discussion on the Parranda network and the La Placita blog as we begin preparations for the event. In the meantime, tonight, here at La Placita, we have three questions for the entire community:
Where are you from? As many of you know, the first focus of Parranda is the construction of a digital, interactive map that will tell us more about who we are, where we are, and what we care about. By joining Parranda, you will immediately help us gather the information we need for the project – on the registration form, we ask you for your location. But you can also help us gather momentum and excitement for the project before we publish the first draft of the map (sometime in January) by letting folks here tonight know where you are from.
What do you care about? Again, the mapping project will also help us better understand the issues that most concern us. But we can begin sharing some of this information here, tonight, at La Placita.
Will you join us in San Juan this Spring? We can’t share many details about the event, because like so many things here at Parranda, the event is a work in progress. In fact, we will be counting on you to help shape the experience. Look for more details in January. But here, tonight at La Placita, we’d like to poll the community and see who might be interested in attending. And note: as we announced in a press release just moments ago, Parranda will be working with charitable and corporate sponsors to fly Parranda members from the US to Puerto Rico for the May summit and island members to events in the US. We will award these spots to some of our biggest Parrandero leaders based on their contributions – including their work in expanding the Parranda network – and financial need.
Three questions. What do you think? We will be monitoring the conversation throughout the night in multiple time zones. Looking forward to hearing from you before the clock strikes 12, wherever you happen to be.
